One of the best questions to ask your child (ages 5 and up) when they are starting to melt down.  “Is this a small problem, a medium problem or a big problem?”  This question helps them refocus the problem and help put it into perspective.

I also like to have both of us take a breath—small problems we take 2 slow breaths, medium problems 5 breaths and big problems 10. Now, hopefully, cooler heads are prevailing and you are ready to deal with the situation.

What techniques do you use for diffusing a situation?  Make sure to leave your ideas on our facebook page, #MomSays
