Have Fun Storming the Castle: Burnout and Compassion Fatigue in Counseling Professions

December 8, 2025 | 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Mayme Frederick Building: 1440 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Riviera Beach, FL

This presentation will explore the dynamics of burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma and how it manifests in the everyday life of mental health professionals. We will examine both vulnerabilities and protective factors that influence how well different professionals are able to navigate these challenges. Finally, we will set our sights on concrete skills and tools that any mental health professional can use to mitigate the risks of all types of burnout.

Learning Objectives

  • Define and differentiate concepts of burnout, compassion
fatigue, and vicarious trauma in the context of clinical
    counseling.
  • Explain risk factors faced by those working in counseling
professions, including all that we bring with us, and be able
to identify warning signs of burnout in ourselves and others.
  • Prevent burnout by learning to balance the immense
demands of work with the ultimate reality of having human
    needs that cannot be ignored.
