Hanley Foundation Board Member and Boca resident Michelle Makris and her husband John will chair the event that honors their son\, Brice Makris\, who passed away in March 2020 from a Fentanyl overdose. The benefit raises funds for prevention programming and recovery scholarships. \nTragically\, overdose rates have skyrocketed\, and many people in our community struggle with mental health issues and substance misuse. With the help of the Boca Chamber and the Makris family\, Hanley Foundation is increasing awareness of substance use disorders in South Palm Beach County. With the proceeds of this Boca Chamber Festival Days event and Hanley Foundation’s Annual Brice Makris Brunch\, we will be able to increase our prevention programming to stop substance use disorder before it begins and provide scholarship programs to provide resources for those who cannot afford the financial burden of recovery. \nIf you can’t make it but would like to donate\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Southwest Florida First Responder Mental Health Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join Hanley Foundation in Fort Myers for the Southwest Florida First Responder Mental Health Symposium\, November 11\, 2024 from 9AM – 1PM.\nFirst responders of all specializations are more likely than the general public to experience mental health concerns such as depression\, anxiety\, post-traumatic stress disorder\, and problematic substance use. This is no surprise\, given the constant levels of stress\, exposure to trauma\, and the need to be in a continuous state of alertness. \nIn this training\, we will discuss the nature of crisis\, trauma\, and coping. Participants will examine how individual and group perspectives of these issues impact mental health and well-being\, and we will dispel myths that tend to hold people back from healing and growth. Finally\, we will explore practical ways of helping self and others to maintain whole-person well-being\, including mental and emotional health. \nLight breakfast refreshments will be provided. \nSpeaker: Dr. John Dyben\, DHSc\, MCAP\, CMHP – Chief of Research and Innovation\, Hanley Foundation \nSpeaker: Joel F. Brier – IAFF Service Representative \nSpeaker: Tiffany Gordon\, MS\, MHC – Program Specialist Zero Suicide Initiative\, Hanley Foundation \nEmcee: Steve Campana\, Firefighter Paramedic\, Ret. – First Responder Liaison\, Hanley Foundation \n  \n  \n
